Electronic Pressure Measurement in Small Spaces

For decades, design engineers have puzzled over a common problem: fitting an electronic pressure sensor into a small space. The good news is that advancements in modern thin-film technology have led to a solution: miniature pressure transducers.

The compact size of WIKA Instrument LP’s miniature pressure transducer, the TTF-1, allows it to be used in applications where mounting space is limited. But don’t let the small size fool you: The TTF-1 provides high performance and flexibility for OEM pressure measurement applications where accuracy, zero point stability, and low temperature error are essential requirements.

TTF-1: miniature size, giant performance

The TTF-1 pressure sensor element is made of a high-grade stainless steel cylinder. The manufacturing process called sputtering is used to apply the Wheatstone bridge to the diaphragm. This process forms a tight atomic bond between the Wheatstone bridge and the stainless steel diaphragm surface. As a result, the TTF-1’s pressure sensor element measures more reliably and provides better performance than pressure sensors that use strain gauges fixed to the diaphragm with adhesives.

The high-grade stainless steel design offers complete media isolation, eliminating the need for a liquid fill. This results in a dry measuring cell. The pressure sensor is directly welded to the pressure port to avoid weak points that can occur when o-rings or adhesive joints are used for sealing.

Advantages and features

The TTF-1:

  • Incorporates integral temperature compensation circuitry, providing a compensated temperature range of -40°F to 212°F (-40°C to +100°C), so that additional compensation in the amplifier circuit is unnecessary in most applications
  • Offers high overpressure safety and is resistant to pressure spikes and dynamic pressure changes
  • Features thin-film technology for long service life
  • Is constructed using all stainless steel wetted parts
  • Has a two-millivolt per volt low-level output signal
  • Is available in custom designs
